Paid Parental Leave has often felt like a government matter, not a business one.
That is about to change.
From 1 July 2026, the Australian Government’s Paid Parental Leave (PPL) scheme will expand. For small and medium businesses, this means longer employee absences and more workplace planning.
If you employ staff in Australia, this update matters to you.
What Is Changing From 1st July 2026?
The maximum government-funded Paid Parental Leave will increase to 130 days (26 weeks)
This is up from the current shorter entitlement.
The leave can be:
- Taken flexibly
- Split into blocks
- Shared between eligible parents
Eligibility and payments are administered by Services Australia.
Importantly, the daily payment rate remains linked to the national minimum wage. The rate is not increasing, only the duration.
But for employers, the longer duration is the real shift.
Why Does This Matters for Small and Medium Businesses?
For large corporations, extended leave is more easily absorbed.
For small and medium businesses, 26 weeks can significantly impact:
- Workforce planning
- Temporary replacements
- Payroll coordination
- Cash flow forecasting
- Team workload distribution
This is no longer just a compliance issue.
It is an operational one.
What Employers Should Review Now?
With July 2026 approaching, now is the time to prepare.
Here is where to start:
1. Update Your Parental Leave Policy
Ensure your policy reflects the 26-week entitlement and flexible structure.
2. Review Payroll & HR Systems
Confirm your systems can handle split leave periods and shared parental arrangements.
3. Train Managers
Supervisors should understand employee rights and clearly communicate their expectations.
4. Plan Workforce Coverage
Longer leave periods require early recruitment or internal coverage planning.
Early preparation reduces disruption later.
